National Tree Week

National Tree Week runs from November 22nd to December 3rd. As part of that, today Caroline Spelman MP (Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government) Stephen Hartland, representing the Birmingham Civic Society, and I (in my role as Vice Chairman of the Edgbaston Constituency leading on green issues) planted a tree in Grove Park, Harborne.
The Harborne tree planting is part of the Birmingham Trees For Life initiative. In July 2006, the Birmingham Civic Society and Birmingham City Council formed a new partnership to spread the message that trees matter. It's a long term project aimed to promote a better understanding of trees, to raise money so more can be planted, and to encourage the involvement of more people (especially young people) in the planting.
More trees will be planted in the park this weekend - a total of ten beech trees and twenty oaks, plus today's tree which was a flowering cherry. Harborne's contribution to National Tree Week!
