Community Gardening Day

Today I joined in a community gardening day on the Waterworks Estate in Edgbaston. Representatives from Groundwork were on hand to supervise as we all set to work planting a variety of shrubs around the estate. This follows on from a mass bulb planting exercise held there two and a half years ago, and the work to the community areas which Groundwork has carried out - in the Anderton Garden (named after a popular local policeman), Hickman Gardens, Parker Street Square and Parker Street Retreat.
Dozens of residents, along with representatives from the police, and Edgbaston Ward's three Conservative Councillors were on hand to help out.
Through a variety of initiatives, this estate has really been turned round in the past few years. From being an area where there were crime and anti-social behaviour problems, it is now an attractive and desirable place to live. The plants we added today are the icing on the cake!
