United Streets - Edgbaston Clean Up

United Streets of Birmingham is a city wide initiative to help keep Birmingham clean and safe. Today, Edgbaston's Council Hit Squad, Councillors, Council Officers, Environmental Wardens, Residents and Police got together as part of the United Streets initiative to do a clean up on the Harborne Walkway.

Meeting at Portland Road, the section between Portland Rd and Hagley Rd was covered. This spans the Edgbaston and Harborne Ward boundary. The next stretch to Rotton Park Road, forms the boundary between Edgbaston and neighbouring Soho. This stretch was litter picked and two mattresses up by the Rotton Park Rd entrance were picked up by the crew.

Amongst the other stuff we collected was a large piece of carpet underlay, an estate agent's for sale board, a selection of clothes (some of which, as you can see in the picture, had been left hanging from the trees), a large number of academic books presumably dumped by a student at the end of last term, and no end of cans, bottles, fast food wrappers and other general litter.

With 11 of us helping out, it was certainly a case of many hands making light work and the Walkway looked an awful lot better when we had finished. However I really wish people would stop dumping rubbish in this way. It is inexcusable when Birmingham has weekly rubbish collections and collects large bulky items for free.
